Thatch is a collection of little bits and pieces of dead grass. Normally this is broken down naturally but sometimes collects faster than it can be naturally broken down. This just like compacted soil prevents the grassroots from getting the air, water, and nutrients that they need. Dethatching is a process of which the excess thatch is removed from the surface allowing your lawn access to the nutrients and air it needs.
